Emoji are more than just cute symbols for teenagers ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŽค.

They can represent

๐Ÿ’ก complex ideas and emotions ๐ŸŽญ

in a single,
compact form ๐ŸŽฏ,

or be combined to form 

๐Ÿงฉ๐ŸŒ€โš›๏ธ
more complex concepts,

or even

๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’ซ๐ŸŒ 
abstract narratives.

Although easily ambiguous by themselvesย ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ, when used as semiotic representationsย ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŽจย with specifically defined meaning and purpose (such as by providing a keyย ๐Ÿ”‘ย or legendย ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ), they become as adaptableย ๐Ÿ”„, as dynamicย ๐ŸŒช๏ธ, and as specificย ๐Ÿ”Žย as the 26 letters in the alphabetย ๐Ÿ”ค or the 10 decimal symbols we use ๐Ÿ”ข.

Except that there are currently 3,664 Emoji ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ“ˆ as per Unicode version 15.0!

Think of Emoji, for a moment, as a number system – ๐Ÿงฎย  Emojinaryย  numbersย  ๐Ÿงฉ๐Ÿ“Š, if you will.

The decimal system ๐Ÿ”ข, the most familiar number system, uses 10 symbols (0๏ธโƒฃ-9๏ธโƒฃ), conveniently corresponding to our 10 human fingers ๐Ÿ™Œ.

With each place to the left โฌ…๏ธ, the value it represents is 10 times that of the place to its right โžก๏ธ. Hence, we can represent increasingly larger numbers with more digits.

Now, consider a character like Mickey Mouse ๐Ÿญ, who has only 8 fingers. He might use an octal system ๐ŸŽฑ, which relies on 8 symbols (0๏ธโƒฃ-7๏ธโƒฃ), and with each step to the left โฌ…๏ธ, the value multiplies by eight.

Venturing into the realm of computing, we encounter the binary system ๐Ÿ’ป, using only 2 symbols (0๏ธโƒฃ-1๏ธโƒฃ), coinciding with the on-off nature of electric signals โšก. In this system, each additional digit doubles the potential values.

Furthermore, the hexadecimal system ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ, used widely in computer science, employs 16 symbols (0๏ธโƒฃ-9๏ธโƒฃ and A-F). Each added digit multiplies the number of possible values by 16.

Now, imagine a hypothetical creature from an exotic corner of the universe ๐ŸŒŒ๐Ÿ‘พ, having 3,664 appendages or tentacles! They might utilize a vast and vibrant ’emojinary’ number system ๐ŸŽญ. With the 3,664 emoji in Unicode 15.0 ๐Ÿงฎ๐ŸŒˆ, each additional ‘digit’ would multiply the potential representations by 3,664! Such a system could express a virtually endless range of concepts, emotions, and narratives in a few compact symbols.

Just 3 emojinary “digits” ๐Ÿงฎ๐Ÿ”ข๐Ÿ”ฃ would already allow for 49,188,818,944 (3,664 x 3,664 x 3664) ๐Ÿš€ different combinations!

Ethnologue ๐Ÿ“š, a comprehensive reference work cataloging all of the world’s known living languages, lists about 7,139 ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ”ข living languages ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ.

Based on known knowledge ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ“– and considering the complexities ๐Ÿงฉ, a rough estimate of dead written languages ๐Ÿ“œ๐Ÿ’€ could range between 300 to 500. This considers ancient languages with distinct writing systems, variations of those languages, and scripts that have evolved significantly over time to the point where their older versions are considered separate languages ๐Ÿ‘ฅ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ๐Ÿ”.

However, it’s important to stress that this is a rough estimate ๐Ÿ”ฎโœจ, as comprehensive data on this subject is hard to find and interpret ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ”ญ.

According to Merriam-Webster ๐Ÿ“š, it has been estimated that the vocabulary of English ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ“ includes roughly 1 million words ๐ŸŽ‰ (although most linguists would take that estimate with a chunk of salt ๐Ÿง‚, and some have said they wouldn’t be surprised if it is off the mark by a quarter-million) ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ญ.

So for the sake of this exercise let’s take those values across all languages for all examples.

We know that dead languages ๐Ÿ“œ๐Ÿ’€ would most likely not have had as large a vocabulary as modern languages, but for the sake of simplifying the calculation ๐Ÿงฎ to illustrate our point, let us go with the following:

๐ŸŒ =ย 7,139 (Living languages)
๐Ÿ’€ = 500 (Dead languages)
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ = 1,000,000 (Words per language)
๐Ÿ“ˆ = Total words across languages

So;
(๐ŸŒ + ๐Ÿ’€) * ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ = ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Gives us;

That means we could represent all words in all languages ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“œ if we represented each unique word with a three Emoji combination ๐Ÿงฉ๐Ÿ”ข๐Ÿ”ค, and we would still have 41,549,818,944 unused combinations! ๐ŸŽŠ๐Ÿ’ก๐ŸŒŒ

Clearly, we can’t just replace words with Emoji ๐Ÿ˜… willy-nilly. Unless we know exactly what the agreed upon meaning of an Emoji is ๐Ÿ“œ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ”, it can easily lead to even greater miscommunication ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธโŒ๐Ÿ’ฅ. And let’s be honest, an emojinary number system might be quite a challenge for the human mind ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿ”ฃ.

In the grand tapestry ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ of communication ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ, Emoji ๐Ÿงฉ๐ŸŽญ have their own distinct place ๐Ÿž๏ธโœจ.

But much like a vibrant piece of art, emojis can convey emotions, concepts, or narratives that can be interpreted differently depending on the viewer and context ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ.

To accurately decode the meaning, we might need a key or legend โ€” a set of reference points or a surrounding context ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ๐Ÿ”‘. This allows us to navigate through the story that the emojis are trying to tell, much like a map that helps us understand unfamiliar terrain ๐Ÿงญ๐ŸŒ.

๐Ÿ‘ธ Here’s another example:

We ๐Ÿ‘ฅ didn’t even need to represent every word ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ“œ๐Ÿšซ!

But without us ๐Ÿ‘ฅ including the key ๐Ÿ”‘ (i.e. the lyrics ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ“, in this case), you would most likely not have understood what that meant, and even then, some of you may have needed to take a moment to figure it out ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ญโ“.

But the same could be said for many coding language syntaxes ๐Ÿ”ฃ or file formats ๐Ÿ“.

And that’s because file formats are digitally ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ interpreted for the user, and code is understood by a developer ๐Ÿ’ป through experience and expertise ๐Ÿ”, further simplified through integrated development environments that offer features such as syntax highlighting ๐ŸŒˆ, autocomplete โœ…, and documentation referencing ๐Ÿ“„ to facilitate the development process.
